Abstract

Abstract This short story takes the form of a journal entry where the author reflects on their life as a doctor. Growing up in a family of doctors and undergoing the rigorous training and selection processes of medicine conditioned them to be ruthlessly competitive and self-centred. However, their perspective shifts when their younger sister, also a medical student, unexpectedly takes her own life. The author realizes that despite being surrounded by doctors, they failed to recognize the signs of their sister’s mental health struggles and how they could have supported her. This traumatic experience leads the author to question the culture of medicine and the lack of emphasis on empathy and emotional support for both patients and fellow medical professionals. The story serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of neglecting mental health and the importance of cultivating a more compassionate and understanding medical culture.
