Abstract
The world map of Juan de la Cosa has been a cartographic yardstick by which to assess those American coasts discovered by 1500. In recent years attempts have been made to give it a later date?even as late as 1529. This paper, admitting that La Cosa did not draw the map, and that it is, as G. R. Crone noted, an assemblage of maps, suggests that the considerable error made in the latitude ofthe coasts and islands ofthe Caribbean means that it cannot be dated later than 1501. It is also suggested that Amerigo Vespucci may have helped with the construction of the map, and was perhaps responsible for taking it to Portugal.
