Abstract

The first 13 years of the Darfur genocide has led to much dispute in the international community. Heated debate has surrounded the cause of the genocide, the UN's involvement, the ICC's prosecution, the various standpoints that states have adopted, and, most significantly, the future of persons in the region. It is such questions and concerns that this paper seeks to address. The first part of this paper thus offers the background and history of the Darfur conflict. In the second part of the paper, I address the major question plaguing the international community: Should what is happening in Darfur be considered genocide? In the third part of this paper, I offer an in-depth analysis of the various responses from members of the international community regarding the conflict in Darfur. Finally, I consider the potential future of this tumultuous region in the concluding section of this paper.
