Abstract

This article analyzes the theme of connection in Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano’s 2019 film Hors normes in relation to wider discussions around the representation of disability on screen. Exploring the dangers of disconnection, Hors normes showcases a rarely seen side to the disability care sector. This article examines the various points of connection between the film’s characters and the institutions they represent, such as the developing rapport between a newly trained support worker and a teenager with severe autism. The two central characters of Bruno (Vincent Cassel) and Malik (Reda Kateb) are inspired by real-life care providers in France specializing in the support of individuals with complex needs. The film combats a sense of bureaucratic and societal disconnection with the more confronting aspects of disability by showcasing moments of emotional and physical connection. This article argues that Hors normes is a valuable artistic contribution to discussions about responsibility, advocacy and the welfare of society’s most vulnerable members.
