Abstract

The cyclic-hardening behaviour, the cyclic stress-strain (CSS) response and the strain life behaviour were studied for copper and a-brass of two grain sizes at constant total strain amplitudes. The saturated stress for copper was grain size independent at low amplitudes, where a lower plateau was observed in the CSS curves. This plateau is rationalized in terms of the strong influence of the control parameter on the cyclic behaviour at low amplitudes. The cyclic response of a-brass was grain size dependent. An intermediate plateau in the CSS curve was obtained for the coarser grain size. The different stages in the CSS curves were reflected in the Manson-Coffin plots.
