Abstract

Investigations of the aerodynamic behavior of coarse particles require the inclusion of inertial terms of the Navier-Stokes equation. Theoretical investigation of the motion of coarse particles in a uniform and a non-uniform flow field reported in this paper uses the modification of Stokes solution as a function of Reynolds number. This modification is achieved by development of a fourth order polynomial equation which is a semi-empirical correction for the drag force. The trajectories of particles of sizes from 25 to 200 μm are calculated in a constant velocity and a spatially defined velocity field using equation of motion of particles. It is found out that the coarse particles up to 200 μm can stay airborne for substantial times and distances in the environment where such particles are generated.
