Abstract

Summary The pathologic factors, surgical treatment and results of operation for congenital and acquired aortic valve disease have been indicated. In view of the excellent results of surgical treatment for congenital aortic stenosis, operation is considered advisable whenever symptoms are present or whenever the systolic pressure gradient is in excess of 50 mm. of mercury. Because of the palliative nature of operation for acquired aortic valve disease and the uncertainties inherent in the surgical procedures at present being used, it is our opinion at the Mayo Clinic that surgical procedures are indicated only in the presence of significant symptoms.
