Abstract

SIS mixers based on Nb technology provide low-noise performance below 700 GHz, but their sensitivity drops at higher frequencies due to RF losses in Nb tuning circuits. However, the development of NbTiN- and Al-based tuning circuits enables a significant reduction in these losses, as does the development of high-quality, high current-density AlN x tunnel barriers. The integration of these technologies will yield low-noise THz mixers for the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared, currently being built for ESA's Herschel Space Observatory.
