Abstract
This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current status of mucosal drug delivery systems (MDDS) and explore their future prospects in drug delivery. MDDS have gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential to enhance drug absorption, improve therapeutic efficacy, and minimize systemic side effects. This review critically evaluates the existing literature on MDDS, including various mucosal routes such as oral, nasal, ocular, pulmonary, and vaginal delivery. Additionally, it discusses the challenges associated with MDDS, such as formulation development, stability, and regulatory considerations. Furthermore, this review highlights emerging technologies and innovative strategies that hold promise for the future of MDDS.
