Abstract
Much has been written on the origin and development of the Cuman Bishopric. In this chapter, while keeping an eye on the surrounding areas, the author weaves the testimony of the archaeological record into the narrative based on written sources. In respects to aspects that have already been substantially clarified, the author restricts to brief comments. The Cuman Bishopric was an ephemeral stage in an ample papal program of promoting Catholicism in Eastern Europe and the Near East. In the Romanian regions outside the Carpathian Arc, the Holy See employed the abnegation and missionary zeal of the Dominicans, in order to rally on its side both the Hungarian Church and the power of the Hungarian kings, too eager to expand political hegemony beyond the eastern and southern borders of the kingdom.
