Essay| September 01 1967 The Cultural Revolution and China’s Economy Chu-yuan Cheng Chu-yuan Cheng Senior Research Economist, Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan Chu-yuan Cheng is the author of more than ten books and numerous articles on China’s economy. His latest works include Scientific and Engineering Manpower in Communist China, 1949–1963 (Washington, D.C.: National Science Foundation, 1966) ; Economic Relations Between Peking and Moscow: 1949–1963 (New York: Praeger, 1964), and Communist China’s Economy, 1949–1962 (South Orange, N J.: Seton Hall University Press, 1963). He is now engaged in a research project on the machine-building industry of Communist China.
