Abstract

Focusing on Yum China, this case study explores dilemmas experienced by a senior expatriate manager in China. These dilemmas may have caused the performance to not meet the expectations for two consecutive years and eventually led to the manager’s resignation. Based on corporate annual reports and press releases, the case study analyzes the decision for business expansions (including Pizza Hut and the delivery business model) in China during the manager’s tenure. The analysis indicated that cultural and age gaps might contribute to how effective an experienced expatriate manager could be in a new society where previous experiences are lacking.
