Abstract

This chapter provides context of the Cuban revolution, especially its analysis by and relationship to the United States (most specifically South Florida/Miami). This chapter also traces the causes, processes and outcomes of the Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1959. The distinction between the political revolution to overthrow dictator Fulgencio Batista and the social revolution led by Fidel Castro is highlighted as the main divide in Cuban people and the original cause for many to exile themselves to Florida. Within the process, five distinct stages are explored and expanded upon: democracy, humanism, nationalism, socialism, and Marxism-Leninism. The chapter ends by bringing Cuban history up to the present-day U.S. embargo (as well as internal economic decline) and diaspora community.
