Abstract

TlAg 3S 2 is orthorhombic (space group, Pbcn) with a = 8.154(5) Å, b = 8.792(6) Å, c = 7.029(4) Å and Z = 4. The crystal structure was determined from single-crystal diffractometer data and was refined to a conventional R of 0.069 for 281 reflections with I ⩾ 3 σ( I). TlAg 3S 2 crystallizes with a channel-type structure based on a packing of chalcogen atoms arranged in 3 2434 nets. The thallium atoms occupy the distorted square anti-prismatic channels. They are coordinated to six sulphur atoms in a very polar coordination. The arrangement of sulphur and silver atoms is given by a tetrahedral chalcogen framework which hosts the silver atoms in tetrahedral and linear coordination. The structure is discussed by using stellae quadrangulae as basic repetition units.
