Abstract

The borocarbide La 5B 2C 6 was prepared by melting lanthanum, boron and carbon in a high frequency furnace on a water-cooled copper hearth. The crystal structure of the compound was determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The lattice parameters of the tetragonal cell (space group, P4 ( C 1 4, no. 75); Z = 4) are as follows: a = 8.585(3) A ̊ and c = 12.313(2) A ̊ . Intensity measurements were obtained using a four-circle diffractometer. The structure was solved by the Patterson method and was refined by full matrix least-squares calculations to R = 0.079 for 1305 unique structure factors. La 5B 2C 6 is isostructural with Ce 5B 2C 6 and undergoes a superconducting transition at 6.9 K.
