Abstract

New ternary indides Hf8.14Co7.86In14 have been found in the system Hf–Co–In at 870 K. The crystal structure of Hf8.14Co7.86In14 has been refined using single-crystal X-ray data: Zr9Co7In14 structure type, Fm3m space group, Z=4, a=13.203(2) Å, V=2302(1) Å3, R=0.0453 for 213 unique reflections hkl (KUMA-Diffraction KM-4 diffractometer, MoKα radiation). The coordination polyhedra of the Hf atoms have 12 and 14 vertices, those of the In atoms have 14 and 16 vertices and those of the Co atoms have nine and 14 vertices. The structure can be described as a stacking of columns of cubes, tetragonal antiprisms and cubooctahedrons extending along the coordinate axes, with Frank–Kasper polyhedra and empty tetrahedra between these columns.
