Abstract

Abstract The structure of the cis form of β-chlorocrotonic acid has been determined by x-ray analysis. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/c, with a = 4.92 ± 0.01, b = 8.80 ± 0.01, c = 12.89 ± 0.02 Å, β = 94.8 ± 0.2°, Z = 4. The structure was solved by the Buerger “minimum-function” and the heavy-atom methods, and refined by Fourier syntheses. The molecules form in the crystal quite planar dimers across a centre of symmetry, with hydrogen bonds of 2.57 Å. Dimers are packed in sets of piles along the a axis, having weak side-interactions. Mesomerism in the conjugated system is discussed on the basis of the observed intramolecular distances.
