Abstract

In the scope of the interest in determining the basic magnetic and transport properties of Ce and U intermetallics a number of bulk single crystals of quasi-binary and ternary compounds (U(Pt,Pd) 3, UPt 3B x, UPt 3C x, URhAl, URuAl, CeRu 2Ge 2, UIr 2Ge 2, URh 2Ge 2, UIr 2Si 2 and U 4Ru 7Ge 6) have been grown from the melt with a modified “tri-arc” Czochralski method. The as-grown crystals were characterized using standard X-ray techniques and electron microprobe analysis. The influence of a small addition of B and C on the melt-growth behaviour of UPt 3 is discussed. Information on the unusual rapid growth of single-crystalline whiskers is given.
