Abstract

Of the final three thematic chapters of the study focusing on the cinematic representations of transitional post-socialist Romanian society, this chapter focuses on New Romanian Cinema’s constructions of masculinity in the sphere of the family. The primary goal of the chapter is to highlight the transformations the male characters undergo in the films set within domestic spaces. The crisis of masculinity appears in new Romanian films in various forms, which overlap through the failure of the male lead characters to perform the traditional role of the head of the household or the family.
