Abstract

In a recent paper by atkins (IRRD abstract 809162) the changes were considered that have taken place in the UK transport modelling scene in the past ten years in order to determine whether problems detected have been eliminated or have become worse. That paper identified three problem areas: the ageing of databases; lack of model validity; and attack by UK government on transport planning. This article discusses advances made in such areas as equilibrium modelling that overcome problems related to the four-stage transportation model structure. The author suggests the use of flexible models, that allow a 'long-term' plan to be monitored, such as form the basis of the transport modelling system currently being implemented in Santiago, Chile.
