Abstract

Through the neglect of members of the scientific community and through a general scientific illiteracy of the public, the creation-science movement has gained undue legitimacy. The Almond model of Public opinion can be modified to produce an issue-polarization model of the creation-evolution issue. Differences in numbers of individuals considering issues result in imbalances of power. The nonattentive public, those not currently involved in the debate, may hold more potential for expanding the ranks of pro-evolution attentives than for expanding the ranks of those favoring creationism.
