Abstract

Abstract In the last several decades, consumers have been given a more influential role in their recoveries through mechanisms which provide empowerment. The authors describe the start-up of one such empowering program, an in-patient advisory council at a Midwestern state psychiatric hospital. The first author, who was instrumental in starting up the group, said a number of challenges had to be overcome before a consumer advisory council could be installed as a permanent entity. The structure and operation of the council is described, including their complaints about the institution's quality of food and the use of restraints. The author also delves into the hospital staff's reaction.
