Abstract This article offers an examination of the creative process as revealed in the papers of eight musical theatre songwriters, seven of whose collections are in the Music Division of the Library of Congress: Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, Oscar Hammerstein II, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Jonathan Larson.
