Abstract

Norm Breyfogle has been a professional comic artist for more than twenty-five years. He is perhaps most widely recognised for his six years (1987–1993) spent illustrating various Batman titles for DC Comics, most notably Detective Comics, Batman and Batman: Shadow of the Bat. He also illustrated several prestige edition one-shots set within the Batman narrative universe, including Batman: Birth of the Demon (1992) which he hand-painted, and the ‘Elseworlds’ stories, Batman: Holy Terror (1991), Batman: The Abduction (1998) and Batman: Dreamland (2000). His recent credits include work for Archie Comics and two years pencilling the ‘Batman Beyond’ stories in Batman Beyond Unlimited for DC Comics. In this interview he discusses his artistic process; image–text relationships in comics; the aesthetic principles that inform his work; ways in which motion and sound are conveyed within comic book art; drawing Batman; and working in the superhero genre.
