Abstract
The existentially oriented psychotherapists have contributed significantly to our understanding of man. However, some of their terminology is often confusing. Some of these concepts were introduced to the counselor with an attempt at clarification. Psychology today appears to be concerned with the similarities of man, whereas the existential position focuses on individual uniqueness. While clients may come to the counseling bureau with similar manifest problems, the task of the counselor is to illuminate the uniqueness of this particular client. Elucidation of this uniqueness in the light of the existential encounter allows the client's world to unfold and thus the client is able to see more possibilities for action. The essential humanness of the counseling relationship allows these possibilities to emerge.
