Abstract

Σπ production by K− mesons at rest in complex nuclei is analysed with the help of a Monte-Carlo model based upon peripheral K− absorption, impulse approximation and isotropic emission. Σ−π+ and Σ+π− events are considered separately. It is shown that the gross features of these interactions are dominated by the deflection of the outgoing charged particles in the Coulomb field of the recoil nucleus. Specifically, the Σ−/Σ+ ratio in nuclear emulsion, the momentum spectra and invariant mass spectra of the Σπ system, and angular correlations are discussed. Comparison with experimental data confirms the basic assumptions underlying the model.
