Abstract

The history of Native American tribes in the United States is marred by over two centuries of violence and oppression. Yet, for over two decades, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation has sought to empower itself by taking advantage of the capitalist economy into which it was forced. By operating Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Connecticut, this tribal nation has dealt with an array of socioeconomic benefits and costs. This article reports on an effort to measure the economic impact of Foxwoods on Connecticut’s economy. In the process, the article discusses the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s history and Foxwoods’ current operations. Next, the socioeconomic costs and benefits of the casino are examined with respect to its surrounding community and Connecticut as a whole. The article then explains the complications with conducting such an evaluation. While analyzing the Pequot Tribal Nation’s path, a number of recommended best practices arise that can mitigate the pitfalls that it has encountered. In turn, this can pave the way toward a more rewarding future for this tribal nation and that of others.
