Abstract

Perinatal care is necessary to prevent and manage adverse outcomes during pregnancy, birth, and the 12 months after delivery, as recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and American Academy of Pediatrics (Kilpatrick, Papile, & Macones, 2017). However, a recent study found that pregnant families incur significant expenses for perinatal care, paying $4,500 on average for maternal pregnancy and childbirth services (Moniz et al., 2020). In this study, cost-sharing—that is, deductibles, co-insurance, and co-payments for health care services—disproportionately affected those with lower incomes and chronic conditions, populations at an increased risk of adverse outcomes who may particularly benefit from health care during pregnancy.
