Abstract

We derive a theoretical upper bound for the cost of illiquidity to a private equity investor using perpetual exchange options. The model’s framework is built upon existing option‐based models for quantifying restricted stock discounts. We use the model to estimate upper bounds on the historical illiquidity discounts for private company investments in different industry sectors.
