Abstract

AbstractEarly surgery has been recommended as the treatment of choice for acute cholecystitis in several clinical studies during the last 15 years. This was the outcome of a recent study from 4 Swedish hospitals, on which the present study on the economic aspects is based. Fifty‐three patients with acute cholecystitis treated at the University Hospital of Lund were analyzed. Acute cholecystectomy (early surgery =ES) was performed in 33 cases and 20 were subjected to delayed surgery (DS). Conservative treatment was found to be on an average 65% more expensive than early cholecystectomy. The average hospital cost for delayed surgery amounted to Swedish kronor (SEK) 22,755 ($3,034 U.S.). The corresponding sum for early surgery was SEK 13,755 ($1,834 U.S.). These findings support the opinion that early surgery is to be recommended in the management of acute cholecystitis.
