Abstract A correlation of X-ray emission from clusters of galaxies with radio emission and with Rood and Sastry optical cluster type is reported. Of the 10 clusters with the highest known absolute X-ray luminosity, at least nine are strong radio sources. Also, eight of these 10 clusters are characterized by Rood and Sastry as containing one or two outstanding dominant galaxies. In light of these correlations the two most likely X-ray emission mechanisms-inverse Compton scattering and thermal bremsstrahlung-are discussed.
