Abstract

This study aimed to determine the correlation between a sedentary lifestyle and physical fitness level in adolescents. This research is a cross-sectional descriptive study. The population of this research is the students at SMAN 5 Makassar that amount to 1500 students. Sampling using a purposive sampling technique with a sample of 99 students selected based on inclusions criteria and exclusions criteria. A sedentary lifestyle was assessed by using the Adolescent Sedentary Activity Questionnaire, while physical fitness level was evaluated by using the Indonesian Physical Fitness Test. Spearman Rho's test was performed to analyze the correlation between variables. A significant negative correlation was observed between a sedentary lifestyle and physical fitness level ( p = 0.00, p < 0.05) in adolescents. This study suggested a need for education on the impact of a sedentary lifestyle on physical fitness in adolescents.
