Abstract

One of the purposes of this study is to test two hypotheses about the relationship between the age of Catholic priests and their political and ecclesial attitudes. The first hypothesis states that younger Catholic priests are more politically conservative (extra-Church) than their older counterparts. The second hypothesis posits that these same generational differences hold true for Church-based (intro-Church) ideology. Findings from an original questionnaire completed by two hundred and fifty-two priests in Southern California support both hypotheses. It was established that younger priests are more conservative-froth politically and within the Church-and there is a high level of correlation between political ideology and ecclesial ideology for priests of all age groups.
