Abstract

An organoleptic rating (OR) technique and gas-liquid chromatography were employed to study the relationship between oral-malodor ratings and the corresponding concentrations of oral volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in a total of 102 subjects in two separate studies. Both studies demonstrated a statistically significant positive correlation between the intensity of perceived oral malodor and the concentration of VSC (H 2S + CH 3SH) emitted by individual subjects.
