Abstract

In July of 1969. the Apollo astronauts placed an array of corner reflectors on the moon. The array was used to reflect an earth-originating pulsed laser beam back to earth. The total travel time of a pulse (about 2.5 seconds) yielded a more accurate determination (to within 6 inches) of the distance from the earth to the moon (approximate mean value, 239000 miles).
