Abstract

Over the past four years, a superconducting solenoid, cryogenic electron beam ion source, EBIS, has been designed, constructed and tested at Cornell University. The source is specifically intended for atomic physics experiments requiring low energy, very highly charged ion beams. The source and its operating characteristics are described.
