Abstract

In recent years the debate over the dating of the “early-type Galilean” synagogue has been renewed and conducted with greater intensity than ever. Since the beginning of research on this subject it has been recognized that the builders of these synagogues based their designs on classical Graeco-Roman architectural principles and, at the same time, were also strongly influenced by the architectural and ornamental features of the many pagan buildings that existed in neighbouring Syria and Lebanon during the Hellenistic and Roman periods (Kohl and Watzinger 1916: 147–173). Research on these synagogues has concentrated mainly on their architectural design, including metrological and artistic aspects. Moreover, recently there has been a notable increase of archaeological data, following excavations at a number of synagogue sites in Galilee and on the Golan Heights.
