Abstract

A356 alloys with novel core–shell heterostructures were fabricated by the addition of Ce and TiCN nanoparticles, and the A356-1.5 vol pct TiCN-0.5 wt pct Ce alloy had excellent mechanical properties. The core–shell heterostructure contained an enriched Fe core so as to reduce the harmful effects of Fe impurity on the mechanical properties and provided significant load-bearing strengthening effects. Furthermore, the crack propagation from the core to the α-Al matrix was strongly hindered by the shell and hence improved the ductility.
