Abstract

Although the long-awaited U.S. economic recovery finally arrived, this did riot translate into the expected increase in demand for copper. Continuing high production levels in the CIPEC countries, particularly Chile, and restarts in the United States led to a large growth in copper stocks through 1983. Copper prices returned to very low levels in the last quarter of 1983 and for the first time ever, fell below those for aluminum.
