Abstract

The Convict Trail Project is a cooperative initiative consisting of local community volunteers and interested stakeholders, balanced by the support of local councils and government organisations. The aim is ‘to protect, restore, maintain and promote the 240km-long, convict-built Great North Road as a unique piece of Australian heritage. The Management Plan consists of a Conservation Management Plan, a Business Plan and a Tourism Plan. Funding is sourced from existing resources within the local, state and federal government infrastructure - council funds, heritage money, road works, tourist funding and projects such as LEAP, Landcare, Probation and Weekend Detention Schemes. The Project has already been the recipient of several awards and the Great North Road has been nominated for World Heritage listing.
