Abstract

In Drosophila hydei, as in other Dipteran species, numerous puffs can be observed along the polytene chromosomes in larval and in some adult cell types. Each of these puffs includes a section of the DNA of the genome from which RNA is transcribed. Because, in the living cell, transcription of chromosomal DNA may be regarded as an expression of gene activity, the pattern of puffs in any particular type of cell should represent the pattern of active genes. The correctness of this conclusion, however, largely depends upon the criteria by which a puff is defined.KeywordsSalivary GlandPolytene ChromosomeSalivary Gland CellSalivary Gland ChromosomeCytoplasmic LevelThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
