Abstract
1. 1. Coordinated activities among neighbouring cilia are essential for ciliary functioning. 2. 2. The epithelial conduction system enables three types of ciliary responses (reversal, arrest and beat activation) to propagate across the cell boundaries in various ciliated epithelia of metazoan phyla. 3. 3. Propagation of the ciliary responses is mediated by regenerative depolarization and Ca-influx into the cell. 4. 4. Ciliary arrest and beat activation are differentially controlled by Ca-dependent and cyclic AMP-dependent mechanisms in the lateral cilia on the gill of Mylilus. 5. 5. Relations between ciliary functions and the responses are discussed.
