Abstract

Introduction: The value of art, and especially music, can potentially approach a person in a multifaceted way and make a significant contribution to maintaining his or her health by acquiring through this interaction a decisive role in promoting health. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the use of music for community health screening and the degree of reinforcement of socio-emotional trust that it can build, contributing effectively to the work of the nurse. Methodology: A quantitative study was carried out with a feasibility sampling of people visiting two different institutions in Attica and suffering from mild or severe mental disorder. The sample size was 120 (N = 120) with a response rate of 80%. An anonymous, structured, self-completed questionnaire was used to collect the data. The validity and reliability of the test was tested by a pilot study involving 20 subjects (N = 20). Results: Music has emerged as an important health factor for the individual without even requiring specific knowledge as it is inherent in man. Its versatile and multi-dimensional character is confirmed, and it helps the individual to manage various difficulties and gain a positive attitude in life. Its potential seems to be strengthened and its effectiveness enhanced through the team and the group experience. Conclusions: The present study shows that music hides a unique power and with its proper utilization offers multiple benefits to the individual. The simplicity of its implementation enables it to be used effectively in community nursing interventions and in other areas of health care while promoting public health.
