Abstract

Ground-level ozone measurements from a rural site in North-West England are presented. Two distinct types of polluted air mass are identified: one type having passed over the North Sea and Northern England, and the other having travelled from the continent via the South-East and Midlands of England. The former air mass type contains long-range transported ozone originating primarily within continental Europe, whilst the latter type contains both long-range transported ozone and ozone formed from precursors injected during passage of the air mass over middle-distance source areas in England. The monitoring results are compared with the predictions of recent theoretical models of ozone formation in polluted air masses and urban plumes.
