Abstract

I outline a hypothesis according to which, after the beam-foil excitation, not only the up until now accepted discrete excited levels but also states from the continuum cascade to lower discrete states and affect the lifetime measurements. A couple of recently observed phenomena fit the predictions of this hypothesis well. One practical implication of this idea appears to be the application of external fields to eliminate serious cascade effects in highly ionized systems.
