He has written extensively on Reconstruction and his latest book, Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863–1877 received man awards, among them the 1988 Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the 1989 OAH Avery O. Craven Award as the most original book on the Era of Reconstruction.
