Abstract

The plagues narrative in Psalm 78 reflects the context of the Assyrian threat in the seventh century BCE and the tradition of Yahweh's punishment of the Assyrians has been incorporated into the recitation of the slaying of the Egyptian firstborn in Ps. 78.49-51 with the purpose of reaffirming the power and might of Yahweh to intervene on behalf of Israel.
