Abstract

The material described in this report derives from an excavation by P.]. Leach for the Committee for Rescue Archaeology in Avon, Gloucestershire and Somerset (Leach, 1977). It was decided to publish the contents of the pit (F.I02) apart from the main report, in order to deal with it more fully. The pottery sherds in the group came from some ninety vessels, of local and non-local origin, in earthenware, delftware, yellow slipware, mottled ware, red-ware, agate ware and stoneware. In addition, parts of several glass vessels and clay tobacco pipes were included. The assemblage illustrates a range of ceramics available in this area of Somerset in the middle of the 18th century. Further, the forms of the different pottery types indicate the competitive position of products from local and national industries.
