Abstract

This article is based on Arja Narinen's dissertation, Present content of the nurse manager's work and potential future changes in it: a study of the perceptions of nurse managers and directors of nursing who work in primary health care and specialised clinical care, University of Helsinki, 2000.Background:The work of the nurse manager has only been studied to a limited degree in Finland.Objectives:The purpose of this study was to clarify the content of the nurse manager's work and to analyse factors related to it.Methods:In the first phase of the study, a questionnaire was designed using the Delphi method. The sample consisted of nurse managers and directors of nursing (N = 1 812) from ten different hospital districts of the total of 21 Finnish hospital districts.
