Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to (a) review and isolate stepfather findings from research on stepfamilies and (b) examine inconsistencies in the literature that may stem from methodological shortcomings. This examination revealed that positive or negative outcomes were often a function of the methodological procedure. The strengths and weaknesses of the body of research are presented and implications are provided for further research. More innovative research strategies and the replacement of unidimensional approaches with more interdisciplinary and multimethod approaches are suggested.
